It’s Time to Move from the A1c to Better Metrics for Diabetes Control
Kowalski, et al

Despite recent advances in diabetes treatment, the goal of minimizing hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic exposure remains a challenge. Bergenstal et al. have provided a critical step in the right direction by defining and prioritizing key diabetes glucose control metrics. They also describe a new tool, called the Ambulatory Glucose Profile (AGP), which presents thousands of glucose data points on a visual “Dashboard.”

Tools, such as the AGP, could empower both provider and patient with data-driven recommendations, potentially transforming the diabetes ecosystem. However, without standardized outcome metrics and formalization of these recommendations, optimal adoption and use will be blunted, and that, say authors, is an “unacceptable outcome.”
